Food, Flavor & Fragrance

The Food Flavor and Fragrance Industry is dependent on advanced distillation techniques to deliver high-quality products. Through extensive research and practical application, Koch Modular’s technologies have been developed to execute these advanced distillation techniques for a wide variety of products. Koch Modular has proven expertise in the separation and purification of compounds that are important to the Food, Flavor, and Fragrance Industry.

Koch Modular has experience with citrus peel oil folding and fractionation, mint oil fractionation, purification of fragrance compounds, fractionation of fish oils, vitamin purification, decaffeination of coffee beans, and oleochemical production and purification. Most of these applications are dependent on deep vacuum distillation because of the thermally sensitive nature of these compounds. In many cases, Koch Modular has utilized the extensive resources of our pilot plant facility to develop the processes and to collect the basic equilibrium data necessary to design commercial-scale systems.

Advanced Purification Processes for the Food Flavor & Fragrance Industries

In the flavor and fragrance industry, special care must be given to keep processing temperatures low during the distillation process because the organic compounds that make up the flavor or fragrance are temperature sensitive, meaning they are vulnerable to decomposition and cracking if exposed to sustained high temperatures. Koch Modular has extensive experience in designing high vacuum components such as packed distillation columns and low-pressure drop, low residence time heat exchange equipment such as falling film reboilers, and directly coupled condensers. Through technological advancements, we have been able to reduce energy consumption for our clients and economically purify their high-value products.

Koch Modular has supplied hybrid systems that accomplish continuous and batch folding of citrus peel oils that are then employed for isolation of specific compounds from those folded oils. We have also provided mint oil batch distillation systems for the separation of various fractions from spearmint and peppermint oils.
